Cutting bubbles using wire-mesh structures : direct numerical simulations

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Bubble column reactors suffer from bubble coalescence resulting in a decreased mass transfer efficiency. In order to increase the mass transfer rate in bubble column reactors, a novel reactor is proposed, the Micro-Structured Bubble Column (MSBC). is novel reactor makes use of a wire-mesh serving the purpose of cuing bubbles into smaller bubbles. is increases the specific bubble surface area as well as the mass transfer coefficient, due to the enhanced surface dynamics. e first step is understanding the fluid-structure interaction in the limiting case of single-phase flow past crossing cylinders not reported in literature so far. To this end Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) are performed, where the presence of the wire-mesh consisting of intersecting cylinders is accounted for by using an Immersed Boundary Method (IBM). e IBM is verified with existing literature data for flow past a single cylinder. Finally an extensive set of simulations has been conducted for intersecting cylinders varying in cylinder diameter and Reynolds numbers. From these simulations a new drag relation is derived describing the drag as a function of the Reynolds number and the pitch to cylinder diameter, p/D, ratio. *is chapter is based on: Segers, Kuipers, and Deen (2013)

Investigation of Wire Grid Modeling in NEC Applied to Determine Resonant Cavity Quality Factors

− Numerical computer simulations using the NEC Method of Moments (MoM) code were performed on wire grid models of resonant cavities in order to study how well conductive structures and their surface impedances can be modeled by wire meshes. The resonant cavity quality factor, or Q, was examined due to its high sensitivity to surface impedance. Several half-wave coaxial cavities were simulated u...

A Lattice Boltzmann Method with Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) for the simulation of gas-liquid flows

Two-phase flows with dynamic interfaces are ubiquitous in daily life as well as in many industrial applications. Gas bubbles and liquid droplets are typical forms of these twophase flows. In chemical engineering, understanding the dynamics of these bubbles and droplets is crucial to the design and operation of the two-phase flow reactors, ranging from microfluidic devices to large systems such ...

Numerical Analysis of Water and Air in Venturi Tube to Produce Micro-Bubbles

Two-phase flow regimes are affected by conduit position, alignment, geometry, flow direction, physical characteristics, and flow rate of each phase as well as the heat flux toward the boundaries. Due to the importance of two-phase flow, numerous regimes have been identified. The first step in studying micro-bubble formation inside a venturi tube is to recognize the type of flow regimes. In this...
